Daikin Industries is participating in two Tokyo projects examining outdoor cooling measures during summer 2026. The company is deploying outdoor air conditioners at Tokyo Midtown Yaesu and will test an air-conditioned bench at Marunouchi Street Park 2026 Summer.
Mitsui Fudosan and Daikin launched the TOKYO COOL PROJECT to examine urban heat mitigation measures and improve visitor comfort. Two OUTER TOWER outdoor air conditioners will operate at Tokyo Midtown Yaesu’s first-floor Galleria from June 11 to September 30, 2026.
OUTER TOWER delivers cool air in four directions—front, back, left and right—creating a comfortable space extending up to approximately 3 m (9.8 ft) from each unit. The integrated indoor and outdoor components eliminate the need for refrigerant piping, although power wiring and drain installation are required. Each unit uses a single-phase 200 V power supply, measures 1,700 × 521 × 521 mm (66.9 × 20.5 × 20.5 in), weighs 100 kg (220 lb), and supports cooling and ventilation modes.
In a separate trial, Daikin, Kajima Corporation, ILYA Corporation and point0 will test the business potential of an air-conditioned bench designed to reduce perceived temperature by 5°C (9°F). The third prototype will be installed in Block 2 of Marunouchi Street Park 2026 Summer on Marunouchi Naka-dori from July 24 to August 23, 2026.
The bench delivers airflow from its back and sides to create a cooler outdoor seating area during hot weather, while its design and structure use wood offcuts. Daikin contributed air-conditioning technology and expertise, Kajima will evaluate and analyze the trial based on its knowledge of human thermal sensation, ILYA handled design and engineering, and point0 proposed using the bench as an outdoor third place integrated with the surrounding streetscape and natural environment.
The companies will survey users and collect usage data to assess the potential for more comfortable rest areas in urban outdoor public spaces. The trial will also support evaluation toward future commercialization and business development.
