IIR Approves LCCP2 Working Group to Update Climate Guideline

The International Institute of Refrigeration’s Science and Technology Council approved a new working group in February 2026 to update the IIR’s Life Cycle Climate Performance Guideline. The group, named LCCP2, will revise the existing guide and its evaluation methodology for refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

The original IIR Guideline for Life Cycle Climate Performance was published in January 2016 under the coordination of Prof. Yunho Hwang, honorary member of IIR Commission B1 “Thermodynamics & transfer processes” in the USA. According to the IIR, the publication has ranked among its most downloaded technical publications and has been widely consulted worldwide since 2017.

The new working group was proposed by IIR Commissions B1, B2, and E2. Its objectives include reviewing assumptions and baseline reference data, updating calculations to include emissions from material acquisition, and revising reference data such as GWP and emission values based on the latest scientific information.

LCCP2 will also clarify emission factors, including boundary conditions such as emissions from upstream activities. The group will expand coverage of equipment, refrigerants, and materials; support other energy standards and regions; balance calculation complexity with ease of use; and provide example calculations in spreadsheet form.

Prof. Vikrant C. Aute of the University of Maryland, USA, will chair the working group. IIR Junior Member Christian Vering of Commission E2 “Heat pumps & energy recovery” in Germany will serve as co-chair, while Prof. Yunho Hwang will act as observer.

The first draft of the updated LCCP guideline will be discussed at the next IIR International Congress of Refrigeration, scheduled for 21–27 August 2027 in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
