UK Parliament sets Seventh Carbon Budget at 535 MtCO2e

UK Parliament has agreed the Seventh Carbon Budget, setting a legally binding target of around 87% emissions reduction for 2038–2042, in line with advice from the Climate Change Committee.

The budget limits UK greenhouse gas emissions to 535 MtCO2e over the five-year period, including emissions from international aviation and shipping. Under the Climate Change Act 2008, the Government must propose regular carbon budgets as milestones toward Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions.

The Climate Change Committee’s pathway attributes 60% of emissions reductions by 2040 to electrification and low-carbon electricity supply. It states that required rollout rates for electric vehicles, heat pumps and renewable energy are similar to previous mass-market adoption rates for mobile phones, refrigerators and internet connections.

Fan coil units and air curtains are identified as viable comfort cooling and heating options during the transition away from fossil fuels and toward Net Zero.
